Studying cities with open data

April 6, 2016

Last week, Center for Urban Studies director Kyle Walker gave a talk at TCU titled “Studing Cities with Open Data.”  In the talk, he discussed ways in which open data is being used to learn more about the cities we live in, and some of the challenges that remain for making open data truly “open” and accessible.  The slides from the talk are available below, and at the following link: http://personal.tcu.edu/kylewalker/open-data/#/

In the talk, Dr. Walker discussed an example project mapping the market values of parcels in the city of Fort Worth using data from the Tarrant Appraisal District.  The example map is below and interactive; use the icon in the top-left corner to pop it out to full screen.  Additionally, for the technically-inclined, a tutorial on how to make the map is available at this link: https://urbanstudies.tcu.edu/research/open-data/tutorial-mapping-assessed-parcel-values-in-fort-worth/.
